Sam Soo Bai - Artist Painter from South Korea

PERSPECTIVES

Stella's Gallery has the distinct pleasure of introducing acclaimed international artist Sam Soo Bai's water colour paintings to the Penrith Community and Australian public.

Born in Aphae, Sin-An, South Korea 1963, Sam Soo holds a position at the department of art in Mokpo University.

His works display a timelessness not often found. Following in the traditions of Korean water colourists, his observations and studies easily impress upon the viewer, the essence of place and synergy.

The PATH

The path is both the residue of living and the essence of life. With each footstep, we have made countless hidden marks. Even today, I seek these traces. Unearthing old paths buried deep in time, allowing my diary notes to seep in to the canvas. The earth, like a mother's heart, is soft and warm. It's depth unknown. And thus, the images felt upon the canvas, keep breathing infinitely.

One day, I observed a snail laboriously crawling through the leaves, avoiding the scorching sun, aware that a parched body could lead to death. It moves slowly yet persistently, following the drops of dew, making it's own path.

I have held this brush for 45 years and although so much time has passed, am I not like the that solitary snail - enduring the slowness of life ?

“The artists must see all things as if he were seeing them for the first time. All his life he must see as he did when he was a child.” – Henri Matisse.
